Remembering Elizabeth von Groeller: A Life of Adventure

On March 9, 2026, the world lost a vibrant soul with the passing of Elizabeth von Groeller at the age of seventy-two. Born in Detroit to Austrian and Canadian parents, Liz's life was a tapestry woven with experiences that spanned the globe. Her passion for languages and cultures blossomed early, nurtured by family visits to Europe and her studies in both Munich and Vienna while pursuing degrees in German language and literature at Wayne State University.

From Academia to a Global Career

Elizabeth’s quest for knowledge didn’t stop at the arts. She later earned an MBA from the University of Michigan, which catalyzed her flourishing international human resources career. Her professional journey took her to diverse countries, including Japan, Thailand, and Greece, where she embraced new cultures and culinary experiences. Each destination left a mark on her, contributing to the rich narrative of her life.

A Legacy of Laughter and Joy

Despite the challenges posed by endometrial and colon cancer in her later years, Liz maintained an uplifting spirit and a biting sense of humor, finding joy in even the most difficult experiences. Her resilience was not just in her fight against illness but in her approach to life—always looking for a silver lining.

A Loving Family Remembered

Elizabeth was the beloved daughter of Alexander Maria Groeller and Frances Maria (Johnson) Groeller, with a close-knit family that included a brother, Alexander, who predeceased her. She leaves behind her husband, Michael Bailey, and their three children, who reside in Westfield, Indiana. Elizabeth's legacy continues through her nieces, Emily and Alexandra Groeller, who embody the grace and humor that characterized her own life.

Celebrating a Life Well-Lived

With her ashes resting in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan, Elizabeth von Groeller’s story serves as a reminder of cherishing life’s adventures and the connections we forge along the way. As our community remembers her, we are encouraged to reflect on our own journeys, celebrating those who bring joy and laughter into our lives.
